Thinking of You: Tragedies Continue!

Episode 1: Rirkrit Tiravanija Untitled (Free/Still)

The event took place on July 16th, 2013 6:30-8pm at Glasshouse Project, in conjunction with Brooklyn International Performance Art Festival

“Thinking of You: Tragedy Continues!” is a series of events that re-enact canonical artworks with comical twists. It invites participants to contemplate the functioning of artistic production and its discourses as the social/psychical construction that enacts and sustains transcendental aspiration. Episode 1 whimsically transforms Rirkrit Tiravanija’s Untitled (Free/Still) into a collective tv dinner over educational/promotional videos and news reports regarding various modes of food distribution. My question specific to Episode 1 is what kinds of political economy make the act of giving a virtue to be celebrated through artistic production? What is the nature of power relationships that the mechanism of gift enacts and sustains? The event will be documented by a camera crew and the artist, and the resulting footage will be incorporated into video work in progress, Joy of Man’s Desiring, which interweaves multiple social/psychic histories that condition and inform the present.
